Abstract :
Submaximal physical activity can produce free radicals that cause reduction of the erythrocytes through the cell membrane integrity damage. Glutathione has antioxidant effects that can protect cells from free radicals due to heavy physical activity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether exogenous glutathione had an effect on the improvement of erythrocytes. This study was an experimental study using separate post test only control group design. The subjects used were 28 males of Rattus norvegicus strain wistar. Subjects were divided into four groups with different treatment. (K1): control group, (K2): a group with a placebo injection, (K3): group with glutathione injection of 54mg / kg, (K4): group with glutathione injection of 108mg / kg. K1, K2, and K3 also got exercise treatment up to 90% of maximum exercise time before injection. Glutathione was given by intraperitoneal. Methods of data analysis used ANOVA in SPSS 16th program. Results of the study were obtained decreasing in the number of erythrocytes (p=0,010) and haemoglobine levels (p=0,000) at submaximal physical exercise (K2). At K3 the effect of repairs red cell count (p=0.025) and hemoglobin (p=0.013) was obtained. In K4 the effect of repairs red cell count (p=0.714) and hemoglobin (p=0.551) was obtained. Conclusion of this study was the glutathione could prevent damage to the red blood cells in Rattus norvegicus and can restore the number of erythrocytes and haemoglobin approached to the normal values.
