Abstract :
The -oxidation of long chain fatty acids is central to provision of energy for the organism and is of particular importance for cardiac and skeletal muscle. Long chain fatty acids are -oxidized by a peroxisomal and mitochondrial pathway, but peroxisomal pathway is quantitavely minor. L-carnitine is an essential cofactor in fat metabolism. Three carnitine transporters have been identified: organic cation transporter Na-1 (OCTN1), OCTN2, and OCTN3 that uptake L-carnitine from extracellular fluids. L-carnitine affect transport of fatty acid moieties into mitochondrial matrix as a functional component of pathway. Long chain fatty acids are transported into the mitochondrial matrix by a complicated mechanism which depends on the availability of carnitine. L-Carnitine serves two major functions. It is best known for its role in facilitating entry of long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria for utilization in energy-generating processes. L-Carnitine also facilitates removal from mitochondria of short-chain and medium-chain fatty acids that accumulate as a result of normal and abnormal metabolism.
