Abstract :

Diabetes mellitus leads to increasing amount of total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides and decreasing amount of HDL. Rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa L) is a herbal plant that may have therapeutic effect on diabetic patients. This experimental study is aimed to know the effect of rosella tea steeping on blood glucose and  triglyceride level. A total of 28 Rattus norvegicus were divided into 4 difference treatment groups. Group A was a negative control without any treatment of rosella tea steeping. We gave 0.094 gr/kg body weight  rosella tea for Group B, group C is negative control (aloksan induced), and we gave 0.094 gr/kg  body weight  rosella tea steeping after aloksan induced for group D. Those treatments were given for 14 days. Blood glucose was measure after 10 hours fasting and 2 hours post prandial whereas triglycerides were measured after 10 hours fasting. Oneway Anova showed that there was a significant different of blood glucose (fasting blood glucose and 2 hours post prandial) and triglycerides level between groups (p<0.05). Paired t-test showed that in group D, fasting blood glucose, 2 post prandial and triglycerides level before and after treatment were significantly different (p<0.05). This study conclude that rosella tea have hypoglycaemic effect and also can reduce blood triglycerides level.
