Abstract :
Autologous vein grafts are the most commonly used conduits for coronary by-pass grafts. However, as many as 20 % of the grafts may occlude in the first year consequently to a sub-intimal hyperplasia. The aim of the research was to study the evolution of porcine autogeneous cephalic vein grafts in the arterial circulation. The autogeneous cephalic vein grafts placed in carotide artery of each of 20 pigs was evaluated at 0 hours (non implanted control), 1 hour, day 1, week 1 and week 3 respectively by histological observation, immunoenzymatic and immunohistoenzymatic assays. The grafts were patent at each time point the explantation. The vein wall width remained beyond the thickness of the host artery after 3 weeks (P < 0,05). The immunohistoenzymatic assays revealed an von Willebrand Factor (vWF) infiltration in the subendothelial layers. The veins graft endothelium retain the morphological characteristics of venous endothelium. The thrombomodulin activity was significantly decreased at 1 and 24 hours and increased after 1 week (P
