Abstract :
Allium sativum L. or garlic is a medical plant widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment of headache, wounds caused by insect bites, toothache, hypertension and worm infections. In this study, the anthelmintic effect of the juice of garlic on Ascaridia galli in vitro was evaluated, using piperazine citrate as standard. The physiological sodium chloride solution was employed as control. The concentrations of juice tested were 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% and 100%. The concentrations of standard employed in this study were 20%, 25%, 32%, 40% and 50%. The volume of sample administered was 25ml for each petri dish containing 10 worms. Each petri dish was stored in an incubator for 3 hours at 370C. Following incubation the mortality rate of worms was estimated. The EC50 values of the juice of garlic and piperazine citrate were calculated using graphical method according to Miller and Tainter. The potency of the juice of garlic was obtained by comparing the EC50 value of piperazine citrate and that of the juice of garlic. Using the t-test with 95% confidence level, it was obtained that the t-calc (17.5897) > ttable (0.025,4) (-2.776), so that the null hypothesis was rejected. The anthelmintic effect the juice of garlic was lower than that of piperazine citrate.
