Abstract :
Background: The world incidence of vertebral fractures is quite high. Vertebralfractures often cause neurological deficits due to spinal cord injury. So far therehas been no research, particularly in Indonesia, which examined the correlationbetween level of vertebral fractures and its neurological deficit.Method: The research design is analytical observational cross-sectional design.Research sample is patients with fractured vertebrae in Surgery InpatientInstallation Dr. Soetomo Surabaya Hospital starts from January 2010 to December2010. Researchers find link between the level of vertebral fracture with the degreeof neurological deficits in patients with vertebral fractures in the Surgery InpatientInstallation Dr. Soetomo Surabaya Hospital starts from January 2010 to December2010.Results: There are 105 cases of vertebral fractures in the Surgery InpatientInstallation Dr. Soetomo Surabaya Hospital in 2010, most of the cases arethoracolumbal vertebral fractures by 34 cases (32.38%), the largest degree ofneurological deficit in the region of the cervical spine fracture was Frankel A asmany as 10 cases (45.45%), thoracal region was Frankel A as many as 11 cases(57.89%), thoracolumbal region is Frankel E as many as 23 cases (67.64%),lumbar region is the Frankel E as many as 21 cases (70%), most of the vertebralfractures happened on man of 83 cases (79.04%) and the age group is 30-39 years(25.71%) with a mean age of 40.09 years old. Conclusion: It can be concluded that there is a significant difference between thelevel of vertebral fractures with degree of neurological deficit (p-value = 0.046)and there is a weak correlation between the level of vertebral fractures with degreeof neurological deficit (Pearson correlation: +0.269).
