Abstract :

Marine organisms such as sponges, algae and tunicate have been known as the source of unique and  bioactive metabolites. Unlike other marine organisms, research on marine derived fungi has only been started recently.  Marine fungi received increasing interest since they produce many fascinating metabolites with various biological activities, such as antimicrobial activiy. This study was aimed to isolate endophytic fungi from marine habitat. Several sponges and algae were collected. The freshly cut sponges and algae specimens were inoculated onto agar media. Three fungi were succesfully isolated from two sponges. Antimicrobial assay was carried out for the ethanolic extract of the fungi by using disk diffusion method. The result showed that extract of marine fungus coded F17-5-14-3 inhibited the growth of Staphyloccus aureus and Eschericia coli at concetration of 1000 ppm and inhibited the growth of Vibrio cholerae at 2000 ppm.
