Abstract :

Background: Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a milder form of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) that consists of affective/emotional and physical symptoms that occur in the last week of the menstrual cycle and remit within a day or two after onset of menstruation. Many things seem worse during this period. Unfortunately many women (even doctors) don’t realize about what happened to them, so that they don’t seek medical help immediately. There are many factors that can influence the severity of PMS, including stress. We choose doctors for our samples because this profeesion is highly related to stress. Objective: To analyze the correlation between risk factors and PMS severity in female doctors that underwent MKDU in Airlangga Medical Faculty July- December 2011. Method: This research design was  cross sectional observational analytic. Subjects were asked to fill Social Readjustment Rating Scale (Holmes & Rahe) questionnaire and Shortened Premenstrual Assessment Form (sPAF) questionnaire to assess the severity of PMS symptoms. We used correlational statistical analysis. Results: Eighty four subjects participated in this study. Twenty subjects (23.8%) were categorized to have moderate to severe PMS (PMS score ≥ 30), 64 subjects (76.2%) had PMS score < 30. Age and genetic factor were found to have correlation to PMS severity. Other factors (marital status, economical status, number of parity, history of depressive episode, history of child abuse, and stress) had no correlation to PMS severity. Conclusion: Eight risk factors were analyzed; age and genetic factor were found to have correlation to PMS severity, while others not.
