Parenting style and child psychosocial factors as predictors of mental emosional problems in hiv/aids infected children

Abstract :
Background: HIV/AIDS infection in children is a chronic disease which affects a great suffering for child, family and communities. Duration of illness, hospitalization frequency and other medical procedures impact on children mental health. Caring for children with chronic condition increases parenting stress which affects maladaptive parenting. Maladaptive parenting since early childhood predicts the child mental emotional problems. Psychosocial problems experienced by HIV/AIDS infected children include: stigma, hiding the diagnosis, lost family members as a result of HIV/AIDS and orphaned. Various psychosocial vulnerability contributes to the development of mental emotional problems in HIV/AIDS infected children.Aims: To analize the correlation of parenting style, children psychosocial factors and mental emotional problem in HIV/AIDS infected children on Soetomo Hospital Surabaya.Methods: Cross-sectional study in HIV/AIDS infected children age 3 – 10 years old and their parent/caregiver use Parenting Style Questionnaire, psychosocial factors data, and Strenght and Difficulties Questionnaire to assess children mental emotional problems. This research use double logistic regression statistic method. Results: 42 HIV/AIDS infected children between 3 and 10 years old and their parent/caregiver completed questionnaires. Results demonstrated significant correlation between parenting style and emotional problem (p=0,044; r=0,312) and conduct problem (p=0,035; r=-0,326). The result also found a significant correlation between duration of illness and emotional problem (p=0,012; r=0,383). Multivariate test showed that duration of illness might be a predictor for children emotional problem. (p=0.028; OR= 0,104; 95% CI 0,014 – 0,787).Conclusion: There are significant correlations between parenting style and emotional and conduct problem. Psychosocial factor as duration of illness may predict emotional problem in HIV/AIDS
