The effect of active music therapy to improvement of communication skills for children with autism in bangun bangsa surabaya special needs school

Abstract :

Introduction: Communication disorders is anything prevents smooth communication (noise). Communication disorders in children with autism occurs due to biochemical imbalances due to the size and activity of the brain on the right hemisphere larger than the left hemisphere of the brain that cause disrupted language function of children with autism. Active music therapy has a positive effect in improving the communication skills of children with autism. This study was aimed to analyze the effect of active music therapy to increase communication skills of children with autism. Method: This research used quasy experimental design and population in this study were all children with autism who have communication disorders as many as 14 respondents. The sampling used cluster sampling technique, based on the inclusion criteria, used 14 respondents consist of 7 respondents as experiment group and 7 respondents as control group. Independent variables in this study are active music therapy, while the dependent variable is the communication skills of children with autism instruments used in this research is to use observation sheet Hidayat communication skills of children with autism. Data collected by observation sheet and analysed by wilcoxon  signed rank test and mann whitney test with significant value p ≤ 0,05. Result: The result showed after the intervention had effect of active music therapy used mann whitney test with significant value p = 0,046. Conclusion and Sugestion: The results concluded that active music therapy had effect to improvement communication disorders. Suggestion for next researcher is we need next experiment  about effect of active music theraphy to improvement communication disorders in children with autism with adding responden, time for  experiment, responden characters, and control moderate variable (environment, parent support, therapy obtained and duration of therapy).
