Prevalence rate of bovine mastitis from several dairy herds in east java

Abstract :

The purpose of this research was to find out the prevalence rate of bovine mastitis in East Java. Mastitis is an inflammation of the udder and is common in dairy herds which causing important economic losses. It cannot be eradicated but can be reduced to low levels by good management of dairy cows. Mastitis causes direct economic losses to farmers in several ways; milk yields are reduced, milk that is abnormal or contaminated with antibiotics is unsaleable, there are veterinary and antibiotic costs, a higher culling rate and occasional fatalities. The research used 308 cows that were collected for prevalence rate of bovine mastitis. Surabaya dairy herd, Grati dairy herd, Batu dairy herd, and Nongkojajar dairy herd were 22 samples, 117 samples. 71 samples, and 98 samples, respectively that indicated as bovine mastitis. The result showed that prevalence rate of bovine mastitis : in Surabaya, Grati, Batu and Nongkojajar dairy herd were 86,4%, 79,5% 83,1%, and 82,7%, respectively.
