Abstract :
The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of etanolic extract of Gynura procumbensleaves in the prevention of breast cancer by inhibit epithelial cells proliferation of mammary gland. The Sprague dawley rats were divided into 4 groups of treatments. Etanolic extract of Gynura procumbens was given every day in 2 doses (300 and 750 mg/kg bw) for 7 weeks. DMBA, which was used to induct breast cancer, was given twice a week start at 3rd week until 7th weeks. Tumor progression was inspected until the 12th weeks after the last initiation of DMBA. Proliferation activity was quantified by AgNOR method.Result of this study demonstrated that etanolic extract of Gynura procumbens leaves with 300 and 750 mg/kgbw could significantly inhibit carcinogenesis in mammary histopathology. Proliferation activity to epithelialcells of mammary gland was determined by black spots in nuclear cells. The comparation between 300 and750 mg/kg bw show that 300 mg/kg bw more effectively decreasing proliferation (1.17 ± 0.04a) to epithelialcells of mammary gland than control group DMBA (2.79 ± 0.03) and inhibit carcinogenesis. It can beconcluded that ethanolic extract of Gynura procumbens leaves with 300 mg/kg bw could give chemopreventive effect on mammary carcinogenesis.
