Abstract :

Several seaweeds have been reported to include hypoglycemic capacity among their biological activities. The aim of this research was preliminary study of the hypoglycemical effects of seaweed extract, from red algae, Eucheuma spinosum on mice (Rattus novergicus) induced multi-low dose streptozotocin, which would be focused on the effect in decreasing blood glucose levels. The main material used was polysaccharide extract of Eucheuma spinosum. Three groups of mice, including control group (group I), diabetic group (group II), and therapy group (group III), were used. Streptozotocin was given at multi-low dose of 20 mg/kg of body weight for 5 times in 5 consecutive days i.p. to groups II and III. The Eucheuma spinosum extracts were then given orally for group III in the dose of 2 g per day for 3 weeks. The decrease of blood glucose levels were calculated per week. The results of this study showed that extract of Eucheuma spinosum lowered blood glucose levels on mice in group II in about 41.24% in week 2, and by about 58.42% in week 3. The effects of Eucheuma spinosum extract in the recovery of β-cell destruction in pancreatic organ are under investigation.
