Abstract :
Indonesia has a lot of plants which are potentially become herbal/traditional drugs. Singawalang (Petiveria alliacea) is one of them, it is commonly used in America as cough drug because of its expectorant effect. It is also known that some people already used this plant to cure Tuberculosis. However, only few investigations have been done regarding the toxicity effects of this plant’s leaves extract. This research aims to investigate the toxicity effect of Singawalang leaves extract to the hypertrophy of white male mice (Mus musculus) cardiac muscle. This was a laboratory experimental research. Singawalang leaves extracted using maceration method and 32 male white mice were used in this experiment. They were divided into 4 groups: group 1 as a control group, group 2, 3, and 4 were given extract with concentration 720, 1440, and 2880 mg/kg body weight respectively. The extract was administered orally for 2 months. After that, the hearts of the mices were taken and made into microscopic slide. Next, the cardiac muscles were analyzed using microscope and count the thickness of cardiac muscle manually. Results: This study showed that there is no significant difference of the thickness of cardiac muscle between control group and the others. Conclusion: This study showed that there is no toxicity effect of Singawalang leaves extract to the hypertrophy of male white mice cardiac muscle.
