Abstract :

AbstrakPenelitian  ini  berkaitan  dengan  pentingnya  minuman  keras  di  Surabaya  pada  tahun  1900—1942. Fokus  penelitian  ini  adalah  untuk  menjawab  pertanyaan  mengapa  minuman  keras  yang  dari sisi  kesehatan  merupakan  minuman  berbahaya  dan  dapat  dikatakan  sebagai  “minuman  jahat” namun  pada  aspek  ekonomi,  sosial,  dan  budaya  merupakan  kebutuhan  yang  diperlukan.  Kajian ini  menggunakan  metode  sejarah  meliputi  pencarian  sumber,  kritik,  interpretasi,  dan  penulisan. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan multidimensional, yakni perspektif kesehatan, ekonomi, sosial, dan budaya. Berdasarkan pendekatan tersebut, dapat diketahui bagaimana peran minuman keras bagi manusia dan interaksinya. Oleh karena itu, digunakan konsep a neccesary evil. Minuman keras menjadi  salah  satu  simbol  budaya  modern  bagi  masyarakat  pribumi  perkotaan  dari  tingkat  elit sampai rakyat jelata serta golongan masyarakat Timur Asing terutama Tionghoa. Secara sosial dan ekonomi, minuman keras memiliki nilai prestise sosial, di mana minuman keras akan menunjukan status sosial dan kemajuan dalam memaknai simbol-simbol perubahan zaman. Hasil penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa ternyata gerak ekonomi dalam minuman keras mengalami tren peningkatan guna penyediaan komoditas tersebut. Bahkan, di Surabaya sendiri kemudian dibangun pabrik bir sebagai penyedia salah satu jenis minuman keras. Secara kesehatan, minuman keras sangat berbahaya dan merugikan tubuh. Namun, di sisi yang lain, dalam tingkatan sosiologis dan ekonomis, minuman keras juga diperlukan walaupun seringkali mendatangkan masalah kesehatan dan sosial.Kata kunci: kolonial, minuman keras, necessary evilAbstractThis study aims to answer the question of why the alcoholic drink from the health side is a dangerous beverage and can be considered as “evil drink” but from the aspects of economic, social, and culture it is necessary. This study uses historical method heuristic, criticism, interpretation, and writing. This study uses a multidimensional approach, namely health perspective, economic, social, and cultural. The concept of a necessary evil was introduced since alcoholic drink became one of the symbols of modern culture for urban indigenous people from the elite level to ordinary people. Socially and economically, alcoholic drink had a value of social prestige, in which liquor would indicate social status and progress over the meanings of the symbols of the changing times. The economic movement in liquor increased as the supply of the commodity increased. In fact, in Surabaya a brewery as a provider of one type of liquor was bulit. In the point of view of health, liquor was very dangerous and detrimental to the body. However, in the sociological and economic point of view, liquor was also required although it proved to cause many problems for health and social interaction.Keywords: colonial, evil drink, liquor, necessary evil
