“foreignization” dalam penulisan rambu petunjuk di pusat perbelanjaan di surabaya

Abstract :

Rambu petunjuk mempunyai posisi yang cukup penting sebagai teks informatif bagi pembacanya. Di setiap negara selalu ditemui rambu petunjuk yang isi dan maknanya kurang lebih sama atau universal seperti petunjuk arah tempat atau lokasi, petunjuk cara penggunaan mesin ATM dan sebagainya. Pilihan bahasa dan gambar dalam rambu petunjuk yang ditujukan untuk umum memperlihatkan jenis  kebenaran  atau  ideologi  yang  dianut  oleh  penerjemah  dan  atau  masyarakat  pengguna  teks tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memerikan kecenderungan ideologi penerjemahan rambu petunjuk di pusat perbelanjaan yang ada di Surabaya. Untuk melihat ideologi masyarakat pengguna terjemahan, penelitian ini menggunakan teori Venuti tentang ideologi penerjemahan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan melakukan observasi lapangan guna mendapatkan data awal. Adapun data yang disasar adalah rambu petunjuk dari enam pusat perbelanjaan  besar  di  Surabaya  yang  didokumentasikan  dalam  bentuk  foto.  Data  yang  diperoleh kemudian  dijelaskan  secara  deskriptif  menggunakan  teori  penerjemahan  yang  ditawarkan  oleh Venuti terkait kecenderungan ideologi penerjemahan dan dampaknya secara social. Melalui observasi lapangan di enam pusat perbelanjaan dan menggunakan 47 sampel purposive rambu petunjuk serta dilengkapi dengan kajian pustaka, ditemukan bahwa ideologi penerjemahan rambu-rambu petunjuk di beberapa pusat perbelanjaan di Surabaya adalah ideologi foreignization. Pilihan untuk menggunakan ideologi foreignization, metode penerjemahan intrasemiotik dan tidak adanya protes dari masyarakat pengguna, menguatkan dugaan adanya kecenderungan masyarakat mengakui bahwa Bahasa Inggris lebih baik daripada Bahasa Indonesia.Kata kunci: foreignization, kompleks pertokoan, metode penerjemahan, papan petunjukAbstractPublic signs have a fairly important position as an informative text for readers. In every country there are always signs and instructions which contents mean more or less the same or universal such as showing directions or locations, instructions on how to use an ATM machine and so on. The choice of language and images in a public signs intended for public shows the type of truth or ideology held by the translator and the text or the user community. This study is aimed at describing the tendency of the translation ideology of direction signs at a number of shopping malls in Surabaya. To see the translation of the user community ideology, this study uses Venuti’s theory of ideology translation. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative in form of observation in the field to obtain preliminary data. The data being targeted are direction signs of six large shopping centres in Surabaya, which is documented in the form of photographs. The data obtained and described in the descriptive use of translation theory offered by Venuti related to ideological tendencies of translation and its social impact. Collecting 47 signs through field observations in six shopping centres, this study found that the translation ideology of direction signs at some shopping centres in Surabaya is an ideology of foreignization. The choice to use foreignization ideology, the methods of intra-semiotic translation, and the absence of protests from the user community, reinforces the notion of the tendency of people to admit that English is better than Indonesian.Keywords: foreignization, malls, signage, translation methods
