Interpersonal communication improvement based on the mindsets of midwifes on mother-child health handbook

Abstract :

The Mother-Child Health (MCH) Handbook is formulated to ensure mother-child health-services quality. It is not properly implemented by midwives as health-services frontliners. Effective utility of the MCH Handbook by the community is contingent on its proper implementation in interpersonal communication with expectant-mothers by midwives. The research-objective is to formulate a recommendation for an effort for the improvement of interpersonal communication with expectant-mothers by midwives based on their mindsets on the MCH Handbook. The research-method: cross-sectional analytic. Midwives who perform health-services for expectant-mothers as well as expectant-mothers who receive health-services by midwives during the previous month comprise the research-population. The research is conducted at the Jember Regency Health Department during the 2 (two) months period of October and November of 2010. The research-instruments are questionnaires and interviews. Lambda Correlation-Test reveals: a significant correlation between the training of midwives to the guidelines set in the MCH Handbook and the mindsets of midwives (p = 0.018), and a significant correlation between the mindsets of midwives on the MCH Handbook and interpersonal communication with expectant-mothers by midwives (p = 0.001). The conclusion: a significant correlation between the mindsets of midwives on the MCH Handbook and interpersonal communication with expectant-mothers by midwives exist
