Abstract :
This study discusses how the portrayal of adults’ superiority toward children in the society is deconstructed in the novel Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. Adults’ superiority is accepted as a society normative belief in which the society contemplates adults as a more superior figure than children. However, because of the fluidity of language in every literary works, the primal authority of adult-child transcendental hierarchy is able to be reversed logically. This study uses qualitative method supported by Derrida’s Deconstruction theory. The aim of this study is to destabilize the novel, Ender’s Game¸ by applying Deconstruction theory’s features such as the notion of absence, binary opposition, inconsistency, ambiguity, and ambivalence. This study shows that the novel deconstructs the portrayal of adults’ superiority toward children. By destablizing the binnary opposition in this novel, that is an adult opposes a child, the adult-child transcendental hierarchy is significantly reversed.
