Abstract :
‘Dependency on the West’ is a crucial issue, but it happens without being realized because the notion about the superiority of the West that underlies the dependency itself has been accepted as a universal truth. When My Name Was Keoko portrays how Japanese colonization has made Korean people suffer, not only because the Japanese has taken the authority of Korea but also because they try to erase Korean identity (Assimilation Period). This suffering leads Keoko, a Korean little girl in the novel, into such a dependency on America (Western country). This study is aimed to find out how Keoko’s dependency on America is portrayed in this novel. Because this novel is categorized as children literature, this study is also aimed to find out how didacticism about anti-colonialism is conveyed in this novel. The theory used in this study is postcolonial criticism suggested by Edward Said called Orientalism. The result of this study shows that Keoko’s dependency on America is revealed in the novel as a manifestation of Keoko’s resistance toward the Japanese. It becomes a form of Keoko’s inferiority complex toward the Japanese and also a form of Keoko’s avowal toward America’s superiority. The result also shows that didacticism about anti-colonialism conveyed in this novel is ambiguous since it also promotes colonialism at the same time.
