Abstract :
Struggle is a process that must be done by every person to pursue the best thing in life. Mostly, the process to achieve the result is not easy. Thus, it is needed for a child to be nurtured and prepared to face the reality, so he or she will be able to survive in this life and cope with the problems ahead. The struggle of a child to pursue a meaningful life and learn from the experience is the central issue of a novel by Pam Munoz Ryan entitled Esperanza Rising. This article discusses how the formal elements of the text such as plot and symbols work together to support the theme of the text and how didacticism is reflected through the formal elements of the text. This article uses New Criticism to examine the issue and the method used is close reading. The writer finds that Esperanza’s struggle to pursue a more meaningful life, which builds her to be a tougher and more mature person, consist of didactic elements that can be found from the text itself.
