Abstract :

The terms “gender” usually relates to traditional gender role which classify human as man and woman culturally in their society. Unfortunately, this traditional gender role often gives disadvantages to the women. However, in some period, women try to struggle against this oppression through the feminist movement. One phenomenon in feminist world came up in the 1990s along with the term of “girl power”. This term characterized women differently from the traditional gender role. It gives women a powerful image which gives them such assertiveness, ambition and independency. From this case, comes up other issues which are related to the relation between the power itself and the way women use the power to struggle against patriarchy. Therefore, this study aims to find out the portrayal of woman’s power which is represented by Lilo Topchev in Philip K. Dick’s novel The Zap Gun. To know the portrayal of empowered women in the novel, this study will apply liberal feminism theory. By using this theory, the writer hopes she can reveal an interesting issue of the text: woman and power in the patriarchal society. Using this theory, this study will examine Lilo Topchev’s character in order to prove the equality between man and woman in workplace. Later, this theory can also reveal how the female character uses her power, not only to gain the equality, but also to criticize and struggle against the patriarchal society.
