Abstract :

This study was designed to learn more about the concept of courage shown in Lois Lowry’s Number The Stars through the use of characterization and setting. The writer tries to dig more about the concept of courage that shown in the novel and compare it with the general concept of courage and to see if there is some value that makes it different or not. The novel tells about a ten-year-old girl named Annemarie who experienced a situation of war in her country, Denmark, which occupied by Germany soldier related to their purpose to annihilate Jewish people. Some general concept of courage and the concept of courage in this novel are conducted by examining the formal elements of literature, especially characterization and setting. Annemarie is the main subject of this study as she is the main character and showing some courage throughout the plot of the story. The war situation also been highlighted as it becomes the important cause towards courage shown by Annemarie.
