The comparation of the use of multifilament polyglycolide and polyglyconate (barbed suture) in small intestine anatomosis with the one layer continous technique

Abstract :
Background : per laparoscopic suturing is a difficult action and time consuming. Approximately 50% fail due to the unraveled knot. Currently, there has been developed a surgical thread which doesn’t need nodes that can reduce complications and closing the wounds 50% faster. However, the safety and efficacy of this thread for intestinal anastomosis remains unclear. Objective : to compare the uses of conventional thread with hooked polyglyconate thread on small intestine anastomosis. Method : ileal transection and anastomosis performed on 20 rabbits that have been divided into two groups. The first group, the anastomosis was performed using polyglycolide multifilament thread, the second group using barbed polyglyconate thread. The time consumed of operation was recorded and observed for 6 days, whether there was a dead rabbit as the anastomosis leakaged. Six days after the surgery, the animals survied then turned off and the degree of adhesion, the strength of the anastomosis and tissue reaction that occured were evaluated. Result : barbed threads can be significantly accelerate the operaion time by 26.9% ontained 3 rabbits died from leakage of anastomosis, no significant differences found between the two groups. Anatomosis using barbed threads produced the same degress of adhesion, tensile strength, and tissue reaction with the control group. Conclusion : small intestine anastomosis using barbed threads was faster than conventional thread with the same safety and efficacy.
