Abstract :

Bilimbi (Averrhoa bilimbi) as the tropical plants that grow in Indonesia is still not widely used. Traditionally, the use of bilimbi to treat hypertension and diabetes mellitus has been scientifically proven. The contents of bilimbi leaves composed of several kinds of flavonoids that posses variety of roles in biological life. One of flavonoid that is much available is luteolin. In this experiment, the methanol extract of the leaves is tested for the growth of Plasmodium falciparum by in vitro test in order to know the anti malarial activity of the bilimbi leaves. IC50 is used as the indicator of anti malarial activity by statistical analysis using SPSS 17. The test is done by two replication and the result of IC50 is 2,805 μg/ml. This number indicates that the methanol extract of bilimbi (Averrhoa bilimbi) leaves is prospective as the anti malarial herbal medicine that states IC50 < 50 μg/ml of the crude extract inhibition activity is prospective. This methanol extract is included in good activity criteria with IC50<10 μg/ml. (FMI 2012;48:96-101)
