Abstract :

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are bacterium that have potential resistance to various antibiotics in thehospital. In Indonesia, there is an increase in MRSA reported from 2.5% and finally to 30% within 23 years and standardized therapywith Vancomycin and Mupirocin has begun to cause resistance to MRSA. These incidences increase morbidity and mortality inburns,. Allicin from Garlic extrac 256μg/ml in waterbased or 500μg/ml in cream based has been proven can kill MRSA with twomechanism of actions. Therefore we try to investigate its effect on MRSA in burns. 27 male Rattus novergicus at about 3 months oldwill be used. 2nd degree burns will be made at each rat’s back using bolt’s head heated in boiling water, then inoculated with MRSA.Skin swab culture will be collected on the 2nd days after MRSA inoculation, then on the 1st and 3rd days after treatment from 3different groups of rats at each period. The specimens will be inoculated on agar plate examining the number of MRSA colony. Thedata will then be analyzed statistically. Allicin from Garlic extract has faster treatment effect (1x24 hours after treatment given) toshow decreased of MRSA colony significantly in all test values with p<0,05 (p<0,0001) and burn healed better, compared toMupirocin in the same period length has not show significant decrease in all test values, but duration of action of Allicin from Garlicextract is shorter than Mupirocin, so the treatment effect of Allicin will almost be the same level as Mupirocin in 3x24 hours aftergiven. Garlic extract has antimicrobial effect to MRSA and wound healing modulator, and its effects are greater with faster omzet ofaction compared to Mupiroci. (FMI 2013;49:72-77)
