The correlation between family support and self care management of the elderly with hypertension

Abstract :

Introduction: Elderly with hypertension are vulnerable populations that require more comprehensive and intensive approach, in order to achieve blood pressure control optimally. One of hypertension management to reduce blood pressure is self care management. Elderly with hypertension need family support in carrying out self-care management. Family support is given in the form of emotional, appreciation, instrumental, and information support. This study was aimed to analyze the relationship between family support and self-care management of the elderly with hypertension. Method: Design used in this study was a correlational study. The population was 83 elderly with hypertension listed at Elderly Posyandu Manyar Sabrangan Surabaya. Respondents were selected through purposive sampling and 30 respondents obtained from 83 populations. The independent variable was family support that obtained through questionnaire. The dependent variable was self-care management of the elderly with hypertension that obtained through structured questionnaire form. Data were analyzed by Spearman's Rho with a significance level of α< 0.05. Result: The results showed that family support was not significantly associated with self-care management of the elderly with hypertension. This is evidenced by the results of the correlation test showed p = 0.338 and r = 0.181. Discussion: It can be concluded that correlation between the two variables related can be influenced by several factors: the level of health, lifestyle, health care system, the external environment of the respondents. Therefore, more research is needed to analyze several factors that affect self-care management to give appropriate intervension for elderly.
