Abstract :

The paterfamilias who has low income and smoking habit affects to food security in the poor family that will influent to under five children nutrient supply and also its status. The purpose of this research was to analyze the correlation between the amounts of family expense for cigarettes to nutritional status of the under five children in the poor family. This research was an analytic observational research with crosssectional approach. The research population was all of under five children in the research area. The sample of the research was the six mounth to five years old children from the poor families with smoking habit in the Sawahan village, Sawahan sub district, Nganjuk district, with the total numbers of 54 respondents. The variable included the caracterististics of the under five children, family characters, family expenses, consumption pattern, the adeguacy of protein energy, and nutritional status. The data was analyzed by Spearman correlation test. The result showed that there was correlation between the amount of family expenses for cigarettes and the nutritional status of the under five children in the poor family based on weight for age (W/A) index and weight for length/height (W/L or W/H) index (p<0.05). Otherwise there was no correlation between the amount of family expenses for cigarettes and the nutritional status of the under five children in the poor family based on length/height for age (L/A or H/A) index (p > 0.05). The conclusion is the low rate of the family income and cigarettes consumption in the poor family will be difficult for the family to supply the nutrient for the children. So, it will need the parent’s awareness, especially for the father, to limit the cigarettes cost and smoking habits in order to supply the children nutrient needs and the children growth will be optimum.   Keywords: cigarettes cost, nutrient status, under five children, poor family
