Abstract :
Diaspora cannot be separated from long distance nationalism towards home country. Since the emergence of Haiti refugees in the 1970’s US, Haiti diasporas in US consistently undertake in many ways to projects their long distance nationalism. One way is to utilize ICT in doing transnational activities to influence development in Haiti. The use of ICT by Haiti diasporas started with the use of conventional medias as printed medias and radio in the 1970’s until late 1990’s. In late 1990’s and early 2000’s, diasporas started using internet, marked by the emergence of various community websites, organizations, and discussion forums them. It peaked after the 2010 earthquake in which the coordination for aids to Haiti conducted via internet. Therefore, this research intends to analyze the impacts of ICT’s development towards facilitating long distance nationalism of Haiti diasporas. It uses explanative method to describe linkages between ICT’s development towards long distance nationalism. It uses framework that combines media capitalism theory by Anderson and Fanon along with internet-mediated public sphere theory by Parham to look into each functions in ICT contributing to the increasing leverage of Haiti diasporas towards the development in Haiti as projections from long distance nationalism of Haiti diasporas in US. Based on the framework used, the author propose a hypotheses that along with developing technology from conventional media towards internet, occurs a widening of function from limited-degree bonding public to the bridging public, contributing towards the increase of leverage in Haiti-US diasporas relating to the development in Haiti, therefore increasing long distance nationalism of Haiti diasporas in US.
