The profil of intraocular pressure using combination ketamine-xylazine and ketamine-midazolam in rabbit (oryctolagus cuniculus)

Abstract :

The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of combining anesthesia ketamine-xylazine and ketamine-midazolam to intraocular pressure in male using Schiotz tenometer. This helps in providing information on the safety of the medicine to rabbits. This study used 14 male rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) age of 5-6 months and body weight of 1,3-2 kg were randomly divided into two treatments using Complete Random Block Design. First treatment (P1), the rabbits were injected with atropine (0,05 mg/kg BW) and the combination of ketamine anesthesia (25 mg/kg BW) and xylazine (3 mg/kg BW). Second treatment (P2), the rabbits were injected with atropine (0,05 mg/kg BW) and the combination of ketamine anesthesia (25 mg/kg BW) and midazolam (2mg/kg BW). The measurements of intraocular pressure performed in minute 0, 15, 30, and 45 to each rabbit using tonometer Schiotz. The result showed that the Intraocular Pressure have no significant difference between the two treatments (p>0,05). However, it did showed significantly influences within the interval 0 to 45 minutes. The  conclusion that the ketamine-xylazine combination was safer than ketamine-midazolam combination for giving anesthesia to rabbits.
