Abstract :

ABSTRACTThe present research is a linguistic study aimed at identifying the intended meaning of essay test items. The sources of the data are essay test documents collected from two faculties at Airlangga University. The samples of the study include 108 test items comprising 175 sentences. Through syntactic and semantic analysis the study found that most items are in imperative sentences, used to elicit argumentative opinions of the test participants. In addition, only a small proportion of the test items are ambiguous, which is due to sentence structures and their contexts. This small number suggests that most test items have a clear intended meaning.
