Abstract :
Child workers often become a serious problem in developing countries since in their ages under 14 years old they should go to school. Child workers are in poor health compared to other children (Todaro, 2003). This study seeks to answer questions on: 1) profiles and characteristics of child workers in Indonesia, 2) relationship patterns between child status and factors affecting family’s decision to ask their children to work, and 3) the contribution of the factors to affecting child workers. By means of logistics regression, the odds ratio value of each variable was obtained. Variables that have significant influence on the emergence of child workers include, among other, the education level of a father (the head of family). For instance, compared to a father having finished the senior high school, a father that did not finish the elementary school would be five times greater to cause the emergence of child workers, and a father having finished the junior high school would be 1.3 times greater. This high likelihood of the emergence of child workers seems to relate to the father’s low awareness of education. Fathers having lower level of education would not send their children to school but tend to make them to work.
