Abstract :
ABSTRACT This study is aimed to know the implementation of Competence Based Curriculum for English subject in junior high schools in Surabaya and to identify obstacles faced during its application. This problem becomes important because the success of curriculum application is related to the success of education in Indonesia. Therefore, any founding concerning its implementation will be beneficial for improving the conduct of this curriculum for better education in Indonesia. The result of the study shows that Competence Based Curriculum for English subject has not been fully implemented in both schools. The curriculum is used for determining the topics of the lesson in class but the method of teaching is still the same as the conventional way in which teacher plays a great role in explaining the lesson to students. Obstacles faced in the implementation of the curriculum includes lack of socialization about the content of the curriculum for teachers, teacher’s mindset which is difficult to change, students’ pattern of learning which is accustomed to the conventional way, incomplete facilities that cannot fully support the application of the curriculum.
