Abstract :

ABSTRACT Household food security is an important phase in food security concept, since it may directly affects nutritional status of the entire family members. Fishermen community is one of the groups in urban communities which is vulnerable to food insecurity. The purpose of this study was to determine factors associated to household food security among fishermen households. This cross-sectional study was done in Sukolilo Village, Bulak Sub District, Surabaya on June 2011. Fifty households were selected using simple random sampling technique. The data were collected through interview and household food security status was determined by using U.S. HFSSM. The results showed that most of the households were food insecure (88%). The study also showed that there were association between income p = 0.037 (p < α) and expenditure p = 0.016 (p < α) to household food security status. Conversely, there were no association between education of the wives, education of the household head, occupation, family size, electronic assets, non-electronic assets, nutrition knowledge, physical access to food, economic access to food, food availability, and Coping Strategy Index score to household food security status. This study concludes that factors associated to household food security status of fishermen households in Sukolilo Village, Bulak Sub District, Surabaya are household income and expenditure. Trainings to improve skills of the fishermen and families is essential to increase household income during scarcity. In addition, nutrition training held for the wives is also necessary to improve their nutrition knowledge.   Keywords: Household Food Security, Fishermen, Coping Strategy Index
