Abstract :

ABSTRACT The government had been promoting exclusive breastfeeding. In contras, there was reduction number of exclusive breastfeeding in the last three years at Nelayan Public Health Centre and only 11,82% in 2010 (target was 80%). It maybe caused by multi factors such as maternal characteristic, family and health care support. The objective of this research was to analyze the correlation between maternal characteristic, family support and health care support with the pattern of breast feeding. This research was observational analytic with cross sectional design, which subjects were 79 mothers of 6–11 months baby at Nelayan Public Health Centre’s areas and selected by simple random sampling. Data about family and health care support were measured by questionnaire that had been modified from Hughes Breastfeeding Support Scale and ten steps to success breastfeeding then analyzed by chi-square test (α = 5%). The exclusive breastfeeding was 19.0%, the majority of mothers was 20–35 years old, high school educated, did not work, maternals knowledge was high, have negative attitude to exclusive breastfeeding, family support and health care support were categorized moderate. There were correlation between knowledge (p = 0.003), attitude (p = 0.006), family support (p = 0.002), health care support (p = 0.001) with the pattern of breastfeeding. The family and health care should be support breastfeed mother by giving praise, valuation, help and information.   Keywords: exclusive breastfeeding, maternal characteristics, family support, health care support
