Abstract :

Physical fitness is important for medical students to undergo intra and extra-curricular activities. Medical students should also have a good Body Mass Index (BMI) for physical endurance, effectiveness and efficiency in running the lecture. Several studies have been conducted about the correlation of physical fitness and BMI, but there are opposite results. This study was performed to determine the correlation between BMI with physical fitness. A cross-sectional study was conducted on male student class of 2011 Faculty of Medicine Airlangga University. Male students were selected because they have more muscle than female students. Samples were obtained by total sampling and fulfill the inclusion criteria. Physical fitness is measured by the Harvard Step Test and obtained Physical Fitness Index (PFI). Measurements of weight and height were conducted to determine BMI. Data obtained were categorized and analyzed with SPSS software version 16. 81 samples had an average BMI of 23.55 (SD 3.61) kg / m 2. The average of physical fitness is 26.6 (SD 12.93) with the slow manner PFI formula and 26.8 (SD 13.2) with the fast manner PFI formula. Data analysis with Fisher's Exact Test between BMI with slow and fast manner PFI showed that there is no correlation between BMI with physical fitness (p = 0.525 and p = 0.402).
