Abstract :
Physiological basis for the actions of plant-derived cannabinoids has been explained by the discovery of two cannabinoid receptors and their endogenous ligands, the endocannabinoids. These substances include anandamide, 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG), noladin ether, NADA, and virodhamine. The endocannabinoids-cannabinoid receptor (ECBR) system influences energy balance and food intake at four different levels: hedonic evaluation at the limbic system level, modulation integrative functions of feeding behaviour within the hypotalamus and hindbrain and, peripherally, in the intestinal system and adipose tissue. The drugs significantly increase intake, elevated hunger ratings and enhanced food appreciation. Clinically, THC (dronabinol) which is psychoactive compound of cannabinoids used to combat a reduction in appetite and consequent weight reduction and wasting, whereas the antagonist receptor of cannabinoid 1 (CB1 receptor), rimonabant used to reduce food intake and adiposity in patient with obesity
