Abstract :

Leukocyte will leave the bloodstream by crossing the endothelial monolayer that lines the vessels and migrate into the underlying tissues. The process of extravasation involves a range of adhesion molecules on both leukocytes and endothelial cells. Leukocytes roll on adhesion molecules, undergo activation, become tightly adherent to the endothelium, and then transmigrate the vessel wall to enter the peripheral tissues. Many of the molecules that mediate these adhesive events have now been defined, and the combinatorial diversity of the interactions involved in these steps may explain the specificity in leukocyte recruitment.
