Abstract :

Katuk is a plant that has active compounds which can stimulate reproductive hormones. The purpose of this research was to know the impact of ethanol leaf extract of katuk feeding to the growing ram on cauda epididymal’s sperm characteristics. This research was done on six growth local rams around five months old which was divided into two groups; EtOH group and control group. Ram were feed with 1.500 mg/day of ethanol leaf extract of katuk for two months, where in control group were feed only with placebo. The epididymis were collected after slaughtered and the sperm were collected. Collected sperm were analyzed for several sperm characteristics such as concentration, motility, viability, membrane integrity, and abnormality during storage for five days in refrigerator. Sperm concentration and epididymal weight were checked on first day. The result of this research showed there were no significant difference in the sperm concentration in both treatment. Sperm motility, viability, membrane integrity, and abnormality were decreased day by day. However, no significance difference in sperm characteristics in both treatment during storage for five days. The sperm motility was not detected on the day four. Interestingly, the viability were still high and detected until the end of the research.
