Abstract :
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of body condition score (BCS) on estrous response and fertility in Etawa crossbred goats (ECG). Twenty ECG were allocated to two equal groups based on the BCS. Group I (n = 10) with the BCS 2 (low) and Group II (n = 10) with the BCS 3 (ideal). All does received intravaginal CIDR for 10 days plus injection of PGF2 48 h before CIDR removal. Estrous detection was done using vasectomized buck. Goats were inseminated with double dose of frozen-thaw semen at 24 h after the onset of estrous. Blood sampling was carried out every 3-6 hours from 0 hours through 66 hours after CIDR removal. Estrous response for all groups was 100%. The onset of estrous was fastest in the group II then I (26.59 ± 0.98 h vs 36.61 ± 2.5 h; P< 0.05). The estrous duration for the group I and II were 36.61 ± 2.5 and 35.6 ± 2.6 h (P>0.05) respectively. LH surge occurred in group II, concentrations of LH (ng/mL) 9.9± 9.1; 4.5± 4.0; and 18.2± 9.1, occured in 45 h, 48 h and 51 h respectively after removed CIDR. Kidding percentage following artificial insemination (AI) in the group I and II was 0% and 50%, respectively. The study suggest that the use of CIDR treatments plus PGF2 48 h before CIDR removal was effective in synchronizing estrous in ECG with BCS 3, the conception and live birth occur following AI.
