Abstract :
Results of artificial insemination in dairy cows are mainly depend on the accuracy of estrus detection in relation to the time of insemination. One hundred and ninety eight Friesian cows aged between 3 and 10 years were used in this experiment. Cows were observed for estrus twice daily and inseminated at the day of estrus detected. Milk samples for progesterone determination were collected at the day of insemination. The milk progesterone levels were measured by microtitre plate ELISA. The results showed that the highest level progesterone on the day of successful insemination was 2.8 ng/ml. There were no cows pregnant when inseminated at the levels of milk progesterone above 3.0 ng/ml. The pregnancy rate, therefore, had closely relationship to the level of progesterone in milk, and this could be used for determination of the accuracy of timing of insemination in dairy cows.
