Abstract :
This paper holds an argument that the Indonesian government policies of developemt in the era of New Order were not able to fully uphold people’s prosperity. One indicator of this was the rather stagnant of agricultural sector which worsened since the economic crisis. The paper thoroughly assesses the government policies on agricultural sector and specifically investigates recent government’s food policies. It mainly concludes that the reform government faces a huge tasks in order to redevelop agricultural sector. Besides further improvements in food policies, the paper suggests that the government pays more attention on efforts to (1) further diversify agricultural sector both horisontally and vertically, (2) increase strategic steps in order to help small farmers by increasing their productivity, (3) open new agricultural sector especially outside Java, and (4) help farmers to be more market oriented.
