Abstract :

This paper describes the campaign models used by female candidates in the 2009 elections. This paper is based on a research that found three practices in the 2009 election in Sidoarjo Regency. First, the compulsory 30 percent women quotas as mentioned in article 55 of the Act No 10 of 2008 on Elections. Second, the obligation of political party to place at least one woman among every three candidates. Third, the use of open list of proportional representation system. Among these three, the third one is very significant in influencing model of campaigns taken by candidates particularly women. The open list of proportional representation system has made female candidates more confident in promoting themselves to the wider community. Good campaigns may help them overcome their less fortunate luck as candidates placed in non-winnable positions on parties’ lists of candidates
