Abstract :

Monuments are often the points of convergence between the official and alternative views of thepast. In some cases however contrary to the official names and meanings allocated to monuments, people have their own interpretations of monuments which might derive from either its appearance, location or any other disparate factors to the extent that the original meaning or purpose of thestatue/monument may go unnoticed. This article studied people’s different memories on theGovernor Generals in the Indies. Those are JP. Coen, HW. Daendels and JB. Van Heutsz. Theprime question of this research was to examine how the Dutch was dealing with the past asreflected in those three monuments. How important were the monuments to the Netherlandsregarding to the colonial past? How did the relevance and significance of the meanings of amonument change? The intention of this research was to utilize monuments to investigate thechanging perspectives of the colonizer in commemorating their colonial histories. Archives, newspapers, film and interviews were the primary sources of this research. This research foundthat the Netherlands had their own memories of colonialism. The Netherlands deeply regret andwere ashamed of what their ancestors did in the Dutch East Indies. Their treatments of themonuments to the three governor generals reflected how the Dutch comprehend past coloniality.
