Abstract :
Although interest in signs and the way of communicating had a long history, modern semiotic analysis could be said to have begun with two names, Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure and American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce. Peirce called his semiotic system, and that had became the dominant term used for the science of signs. Saussure semiology differed from Peirce’s semiotics in some respects but as both were concerned with signs. Saussure divided signs into two components, the signifier and signified and he suggested that the relationship between the signifier and signified that was arbitrary was crucial importance for the development of semiotics. Peirce argued that interpreter had to supply part of the meaning of signs.
