Abstract :
The aim of this study is to describe biological variation of neurocranium of human population in Java through times, from prehistoric until modern era. This study analyzes metrical data of Homo sapiens neurocranium findings from five different antiquities: Mesolithicum, Neolithicum, Metal, Classic and Modern. The samples came from different places all over Java island. Martin’s osteometrical method was used in measuring metrical data. The variables were maximum length of cranium (M.1), maximum breadth of cranium (M.8), minimum breadth of frontal bone (M.9), biasteriac breadth (M.12), median-sagittal diameter of frontal bone (M.29), median-sagittal diameter of parietal bone (M.30), cranial index, frontoparietal transversal index, occipitoparietal transversal index, and frontal sagittal index. Through the evolution perspective, this study analyzed the morphological variations and how far evolution principles could be used to explain the complexity of biological variation of human population in Java. Migration, brain enlargement along with cultural development were the three aspects that happening all the time along the evolution process in Javanese people, from the ancient to the modern time. Those three aspects caused the morhological variation in Javanese neurocranium.
