Abstract :
Artificial Insemination (AI) is consider to be one of the branch of biotechnology of reproduction. The artificial insemination of cattle has been firstly introduced in Indonesia at 1954, since then there were several AI stations developed in Java and Sumatra. In East Java AI was introduced at about 1970 using straws from semen of many breeds. In Madura, however, AI was officially introduced in 2002 although long time before, AI using fresh semen of Santa Gertrudis bull has been practiced in this island. This paper described the targets, realization of the programs and the problems arousing introduction of AI mainly using straw from semen of imported bulls. Data of AI activities in Madura island were collected retrospectively from East Java Livestock Services. There are two types of areas in each regency determined by the East Java Livestock Services namely GU and VBC. In GU areas, cows were inseminated with straws from semen of imported bulls such as Limousin, while VBC areas cows were inseminated with semen from bull of Madura beef cattle or natural mating. The realization of target for artificial insemination was very low, it was probably due to the inadequate the number of inseminators which cover both areas GU and VBC and the local cultural variations of peoples of Madura tribes.
