The effect of bitter melon fruit (momordica charantia l.) extract on pregnancy rate and litter size of mice (mus musculus)

Abstract :
The aim of this study was to find out of the effect of bitter melon fruit (Momordica charantia L.) extract on pregnancy rate and litter size of mice (Mus musculus) . It based on active content from bitter melon fruit that is triterpenoid and flavonoid which influencing the ovary follicle development. Those active content work through inhibition of mechanism GnRH secretion then follicle undeveloped. This study using 6 times RAL. The study used bitter melon fruit exstract dosage 0 mg/kg bw, 667 mg/ kg bw, 1000 mg/kg bw and 1333 mg/kg bw then diluted with CMC 0,5% administered 2 times a day during 10 days 0,5 ml per oral. The animal used is 24 fertile female mice. After treatment the mice collected with male during 5 days then separated and make an observation. The result data from the study included pregnancy rate and litter size of mice. The study indicating that there is an effect of bitter melon fruit extract on pregnancy rate and litter size of mice. The real effect (P ≤ 0,05) indicated in dose 1000 mg/kg bw and decrease in dose 1333 mg/kg bw with pregnancy rate reduction consecutively 33% and 100%.
