Abstract :
Abstract Autism is one of pervasive developmental disorders. Autisms need a gluten and casein free diet therapy to prevent digestion problems. Mother's compliance in providing gluten and casein free diet is helpful to improve the digestive disorders experienced by the autisms. The purpose of this study is identifying factors which correlate to mother’s compliance in the provision of gluten and casein-free diet for autism. This study used a descriptive analysis design with cross sectional method. The population in this study was mothers with autistic children who attended school at SKK Bangun Bangsa in 12-14 June 2014. Sampling method used simple random sampling. Total sample comprised 20 respondents. Data were collected using questionnaire instruments and FFQ (Food Frequency Questionnaire). Statistical analysis used Spearman's Rho with α ≤ 0,05. Results showed that from 20 respondents, only 17 had adopted gluten and casein-free diet for children with autism, while the remaining three mothers still provided regular diet like that to any other normal children. Factors associated with mother's compliance in the provision of gluten and casein-free diet for children with autism are knowledge (p = 0.000), attitude (p = 0.001), health facilities (p = 0.013) and family support (0.013). In conclusion, the four variables (knowledge, attitude, health facilities and family support) have strong correlation with mother’s compliance, so we should improve factors that can raise awareness of the mother to become obedient in providing gluten and casein-free diet for autisms.
