The effects of eucheuma spinosum extracts on the sod (superoxide dismutase) activities on mice (rattus novergicus) induced multiple-low dose streptozotocin

Abstract :
The capacity of Eucheuma spinosum extracts to decrease blood glucose levels on mice induced multiple-lowdose streptozotocin has been reported. The extracts of Eucheuma spinosum lowered blood glucose levels on mice ingroup III by 41.24% in week 2, and by 58.42% in week 3, after therapy. Three groups of mice, including control group(group I), diabetic group (group II), and therapy group (group III), were used. Streptozotocin was given at multiple-low dose of 20 mg/kg of body weight for 5 times in 5 consecutive days i.p. to groups II and III. In this research, the therapy effects of Eucheuma spinosum extracts for diabetes mellitus were studied from the SOD (superoxide dismutase)activities. The activities of SOD showed an increase, from 27.219 1.32 unit to 42.570 1.19 unit. The recovery of pancreatic â-cells from therapeutic mice has been shown from the histology of the tissue. Therefore, Eucheumaspinosum extracts potentially could be used as an alternative for diabetes mellitus treatment.
