Abstract :
Abstract Marriage is a marriage of Toba Batak clan exogamy, marriage one clan is strictly prohibited. Initially marriage is defined as the purchase of a woman, where women are released from their extended family after the payment transaction has been agreed upon previously. Transactions can be either a payment of valuables, an animal (pig, buffalo, cow) or a sum of money to the women. In the tradition of Toba Batak transaction process is called sinamot. Sinamot tradition in the urban social environment will lead to concessions to tradition in Batak Toba traditional wedding ceremony, due to the interaction between different social groups. The study was conducted to determine the meaning and function of the Toba Batak people who migrated to Surabaya in the heterogeneous environment. This study uses a qualitative study that describes the type of factually happened in Toba Batak family life are investigated. By using the four families who migrated to the Toba Batak Surabaya and a chairman of the indigenous Toba Batak made informers. Researchers used a technique of collecting data through observation and interviews. The result is a tradition sinamot at home has meaning as a means to bind the relationship between the two kinship groups concerned. This tradition has become one of a series of traditional marriage that has been validated and approved by the Toba Batak society itself, thereby strengthening their social integrity. While the tradition sinamot by Toba Batak people who migrated to Surabaya where people belonging to organic solidarity emphasizes the functions of the existing society. They assume that the tradition is still being done to preserve sinamot kinship between the clans.
